Oil-in-Water Consultancy

Oil sheen on sea water

TUV NEL has considerable capability in conducting consultancy in the area of oil-in-water measurement. We have developed a distinguished track record in a range of services including:

Market Assessment and Technology Appraisal

When an investment is sought on developing and commercialising new oil-in-water measurement, monitoring technology, it is vitally important to possess both of the following;

Through our operation of the Oil-in-Water Club, TUV NEL possess a unique perspective on oil-in-water analysis methods, measurement technologies, and has established a strong track record in assisting clients by undertaking a series of comprehensive market studies in this area.

Assistance in the Development of Legislation

Legislation governing produced water discharges is continuously developing. TUV NEL has a strong awareness of the differing legislation in both oil-in-water concentration and discharge volumes of produced water affecting different regions around the globe. In the past experienced TUV NEL staff have been seconded to assist in the development of guidelines in this area.

Technology Overview and Selection

With the proliferation of oil-in-water monitoring technologies currently on the market, operating companies are faced with an array of different equipment that may be used to measure produced water discharges. With its unique perspective on the marketplace, TUV NEL is experienced in assisting companies to select the most appropriate and cost effective technologies that meet and exceed regulatory and operational requirements.

Trouble Shooting

If there is a problem with the disposal or treatment of produced water from an individual installation, TUV NEL staff possess considerable experience in both the identification and rectification of these challenges

Independent Testing and Assessment.

Testing is important in any instrument and measurement method developments. Independent testing and the availability of performance data from such testing is even more important in marketing and instrument commercialisation. TUV NEL is renowned for its testing facilities and its independent status. Specifically on oil-in-water monitoring and measurement, over the years, TUV NEL has been involved in testing new oil-in-water monitoring technologies, as well as testing to compare different oil-in-water measurement methods. Currently TUV NEL is leading an interlaboratory study project aiming at establishing the precision data that is missing from the OSPAR GC-FID method.

Auditing (measurement procedures and compliance monitoring)

For compliance monitoring, measurement of oil in produced water has been the key around the globe for the discharge of production water. For regulatory compliance monitoring, not only the actual measurement of oil-in-water is important, but other aspects such as sampling, sample point selection, reporting procedures are important. In addition to oil concentration, produced water volume measurement is now increasingly looked at. With TUV NEL’s knowledge in regulatory compliance monitoring and its experience in carrying out audits related to flow measurements in the past, TUV NEL is in a good position to conduct auditing related to oil in produced water and its discharge volume measurement.
